Musical Studies Courses



Beginning Guitar nysmf block nysmf musical theatre
nysmf music camp Designed for students with no prior experience in playing the guitar. Students will explore all the instrument’s basics, including left- and right-hand techniques, basic chords and scales, and hand positions.

Beginning Piano

  nysmf musical theatre
  Recommended for those with no previous keyboard experience. This class emphasizes fundamental piano technique for instrumentalists who wish to learn to play the piano.

Music Theory & Ear Training I, II, III   nysmf musical theatre
 

Students learn all aspects of music, including sight singing in different clefs, singing and recognizing intervals and triads, and rhythmic and melodic dictation skills. Students will be placed in classes appropriate to their level.


Music History   nysmf musical theatre
  The study of jazz, rock and roll, musical theatre, opera, and more. Eras will range from antiquity to the 21st century.

Beginning Conducting

An introduction to the technique of leading larger ensembles. Basic beat patterns, dynamics, phrasing, tempo changes, cueing, cut-offs, changing beat units, interpretation, baton technique, and score-reading skills will be studied.


Intro to Rock, Pop, & Funk   nysmf musical theatre
 

This is a beginning level class, introducing the techniques, arranging and harmonies of classic and contemporary repertoire essential to rock, R&B, pop and funk players. Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists.

 


Rock Ensemble   nysmf musical theatre
  This class will cover commercial rock, pop and American songbook tunes essential to the professional musician's repertoire. It includes daily practice, transcribing and analyzing music. Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists.
