Staff

Successful applicants to the NYSMF Performance Scholarship Program will serve as the day-to-day supervisory (aka "Counselor") staff for our students. Approximately a 1-to-4 ratio of Counselors to Students is maintained during the summer.

The NYSMF Counseling staff all are excellent musicians, and are highly motivated to provide our students with outstanding role models. Staff members are a major part of the 24/7 supervisory team that always keeps an eye out for their students, ensuring not only their health, safety, and well-being, but serving as surrogate older brothers and sisters, always available to help out in any way.

Students and Counselors live in the same dormitories during the summer, ensuring that order will reign even in the rowdiest halls. They will also rehearse, perform, and study right alongside each other in every single ensemble and class. This arrangement is especially wonderful in giving the often less-experienced student musicians an immediate coach, sitting on the same stand, giving invaluable tips and advice and camraderie right in the rehearsal room.

The majority of NYSMF's Counseling Staff are college students attending some of the finest music schools from all around the world. Many, too, are pursuing other majors in their college career, but are making their marks in their respective college's music departments.

A very partial list of NYSMF Staff alumni includes:

The Curtis Institute of Music   The Manhattan School of Music
The Juilliard School of Music   Indiana University
The Eastman School of Music   The Crane School of Music
New York University   Peabody Institute
The New School   Harvard University
Swarthmore College   Tufts University
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute   The New England Conservatory
The Cincinnati University Conservatory of Music   Oberlin College

Many former NYSMF students have successfully made the transition to the NYSMF staff. Outstanding musicians, effective leaders, and excellent role models are what they all must display as part of the NYSMF team.
